Homemade Overhead Crane

Cranes are little more than a glorified pulley system. You can use them for a variety of things. Many people have been known to make their own homemade overhead cranes to lift car engines to be able to perform work.

  1. Size

    • Decide what size crane you need. Figure out for what applications you'll be using it. Decide how tall it needs to be, how wide the base needs to be and the weight and type of materials you will be lifting.

    Design

    • Home made cranes are triangular due to the enormous amount of structural integrity created by the pyramidal design. At the top of the structure, there is a wheel that will be used as a pulley. Behind the structure will be a winch system that will pull the rope over the wheel.

    Considerations

    • One of the biggest considerations is whether you're going to be making a manual crank winch or a motorized one. The materials you want to use are critical: Is wood going to suffice for your applications or is metal more applicable? Test the structure before use to ensure safety.
