What Does Coastal Vs. Basemap Mean With Marine GPS? thumbnail
An accurate marine GPS keeps boaters on course.

A marine global positioning system (GPS) is similar to the devices seen in most automotive vehicles, but instead of plotting trips across cities and states, it assists boaters in plotting courses over water.

  1. Geographic Information System

    • Geographic information system (GIS) comprises the hardware, software and data used in compiling maps. This is how a base map, and eventually coastal maps, are created.

    Base Map

    • A base map is the foundation of any mapped area, and serves as the map from which other maps are created. A base map depicts all land masses, political boundaries and cities to provide boaters with a locational reference point.

    Coastal Map

    • A coastal map provides an overview of all near-shore geographic areas. From this map, boaters can track where they are in relationship to cities and states along the shore, as well as locate harbors and berths for their craft.
