What Engine Fits a Ford Courier?

The Ford Courier was a small pickup truck manufactured by Mazda. It was imported and sold under the Ford nameplate to compete with the smaller Asian imports that were very popular in the 70s and early 80s.

  1. Significance

    • The original Couriers came with either a 1.6- or 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that had around 75 horsepower. This was the standard size for most small pickups in the 1970s. The four-cylinder was the standard engine, and the only one available, through the first generation of Couriers that lasted from 1972 until 1979.

    Development

    • The second generation of Ford Courier trucks stuck with the four-cylinder engine size, but after 1977 were available in 2.0- and 2.3-liter configurations and were nearing 100 horsepower. After 1977 an automatic transmission was available. The Courier ran through the 1982 model year before being discontinued.

    Considerations

    • Like most cars, people figure out a way to make them into hot rods. Aftermarket modifications installed V-6 engines in the vehicle. A V-8 can fit in the engine compartment, though it is difficult.
