Are Pine Needles Good for Mulch in North Alabama?
Pine needles -- sometimes referred to as pine straw -- are among the many mulching materials you can use in Alabama lawns and gardens. Of course, what mulch you use depends on your specific needs and soil conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

Uses
-
Pine needles have many of the same benefits as other forms of mulch. They add organic matter and nutrients to the soil, reduce soil compaction, reduce weeds and protect plants and soil from high summer temperatures.
Expert Insight
-
The Alabama Cooperative Extension notes that pine needles are durable and have an advantage in that they do not mat down easily. The extension recommends applying pine needles to a depth of 3 to 6 inches to provide perennials with winter protection.

Considerations
-
It should be noted that extensive use of pine needles as mulch can lower the pH of soil, making it more acidic. This is an added benefit if you have alkaline soil. But if your soil is already acidic, you may want to steer clear of pine mulch.
