The fluorescent labeling of biological proteins is a useful investigative method in the life sciences. Where fluorescent labeling is not practical, an alternative, label-free method is Raman microscopy.

Fluorescent Labeling

Fluorescent labeling is used in biotechnology to identify specific molecules. A fluorescent molecule is attached to the protein and is used to detect the protein in various biological reactions.

Raman Microscopy

Raman microscopy is a label-free microscopy method that creates a picture by generating light signals from biological molecules. It can detect specific types of chemical bonds and is capable of determining the chemical makeup and abundance of lipids.

Comparison

Fluorescent labeling is the most useful method for identifying specific target molecules, something Raman microscopy does not do well. However, advances in Raman microscopy have begun to improve its usefulness.
