Polyurethane Foam for Mold Making

Polyurethane Foam for Mold Making thumbnail
Upholstered seating is one of the principal uses of molded polyurethane foam.

Polyurethane foam was launched on to the global market for upholstered furniture during the 1950s. Since then, manufacturing and molding techniques have continuously improved and the uses of polyurethane foam have diversified.

  1. Molding

    • This process involves mixing two liquid components -- a polyol and an isocynate -- with the addition of a blowing agent such as water. The mixture is poured or injected into the mold cavity, and almost immediately, a chemical reaction begins. Carbon dioxide bubbles are given off, and as the polymer is formed, these are trapped inside the matrix, creating the foam. This can usually be removed from the mold after about five minutes.

    Types

    • Polyurethane foam is very versatile. Different chemical constituents and mixtures create different properties and densities of foam ranging from soft and pliable to rigid. Dyes and pigments can be added for coloration, and fabrics and leather can be laminated to the foam during the molding process. The foam can be waterproofed or made flame-retardant.

    Applications

    • Molded polyurethane foam is mainly used for upholstered seating, but it is also used for manufacturing medical and disabled products, toys, decorative trims and shoes. Another popular use is in movie-making, for creating special effects.
