What Is a Home Transponder?

What Is a Home Transponder? thumbnail
A home transponder picks up and receives communication signals.

Home transponders are wireless devices that pick up television, audio or data signals. The word "transponder" is a formation between the two words "transmitter" and "responder." Transponders can therefore both transmit and receive signals.

  1. Identification

    • A home transponder is often found on satellite dishes on the roofs of homes. All satellite dishes on homes have transponders. These devices pick up and respond to incoming signals through frequencies. For example, a home transponder may pick up television stations, bandwidth Internet or radio stations that are then displayed on electronic devices such as televisions.

    Capability

    • A single home satellite has the capability to transmit and receive various communication channels. In fact, satellites often have approximately 24 to 72 transponders. Each of these transponders can carry up to 155 million bits of information per second.

    Considerations

    • If a transponder loses a signal due to due to weather or any other technical issue, you could lose television channels until your satellite television company fixes the problem. Some satellite television companies such as the Dish Network have an option that allows subscribers to check on the status of their home transponders on their television.
