IEEE Standards for Software Users
Although the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, began creating standards for electronics, it has expanded its scope to create standards for software. IEEE has standards on software quality, configuration management, testing and implementation. Several of these software standards impact software users.
-
IEEE Standard 730
-
The IEEE standard 730 states what must be included in a Software Quality Assurance Plan, or SQAP. A SQAP must include procedures by which users can report problems and receive notice of corrective actions. Section 12 of the IEEE SQAP standard also requires a plan for software user training.
IEEE Standard 12207
-
IEEE standard 12207 defines the software life cycle process. According to "Managing and Leading Software Projects" by Richard Fairley, IEEE standard 12207 is the ISO/IEC 12207 with some modifications and clarifications. The development process consists of 13 activities. The development process starts with process implementation through software installation by users. The final activity per IEEE standard 12207 is software acceptance support. This final step can involve help desk support for users.

Other Standards Affecting Users
-
IEEE 1042 is the guide to configuration management. According to "Software Configuration Management" by Jessica Keyes, section 3.5 of IEEE standard 1042 is the supplier control portion of the IEEE configuration management guide. IEEE 1059 is the guide for software verification and validation plans, including user acceptance testing of software. IEEE 1063 is the standard for software user documentation.
