What Is a 5 P Welding Rod?

What Is a 5 P Welding Rod? thumbnail
Welding often requires filler metal.

When fusing metal together, welders often require filler metals. These metals come in the form of a welding rod, used as an electrode to conduct electricity, melting the rod into filler metal.

  1. Identification

    • 5P and 5P+ welding rods are filler metal rods manufactured by Fleetweld. The company makes a variety of 5P products, including the Lincoln Electric ED010219 Fleetweld 5P 7/32 50Lb and the Lincoln Electric 7/32" E6010 Lincoln Fleetweld 5P Carbon Steel Electrode 50. These rods are used to melt and fuse together two or more pieces of metal.

    Function

    • Electrodes, such as the 5P, are used for arc welding. In this type of welding electricity, which reaches 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit, arcs between the electrode and the metal being fused. An electrode holder is used by the welder to grasp the 5P mechanically.

    History

    • C.L. Coffin of the United States was given the first patent for arc welding that employed a metal electrode in 1890. He is credited with being the first person to fuse metal using an electrical arc to deposit filler metal from a rod in order to weld.
