Types of Perennials for Landscaping

Perennials are a diverse group of plants.

Perennial plants die back in winter and then develop new growth from the roots in the spring. Because they rejuvenate yearly and most require little care once established, perennial vines, flowers and herbs are popular landscaping plants for home gardens.

Vines

Perennial vines are versatile landscaping plants that are useful for covering fences, walls and other vertical spaces on your landscape where few other plants can grow. Vines such as clematis, trumpet vines and wisteria develop numerous colorful flowers on large vines. Seasonal pruning is required to control perennial vine growth and prevent the vines from overrunning your garden.

Flowers

Perennial flowers are easy to care for and provide vibrant color to your landscape. Many perennial flowering plants such as hostas come in a wide range of cultivars that vary greatly in both leaf and flower color. Other flowering perennials such as daylilies are hardy plants that survive neglect season after season.

Herbs

Perennial herbs are easy and delicious additions to home gardens. Rosemary, oregano, sage and thyme are all woody perennials that will provide fresh cooking herbs for years in your garden. Lavender, mint and lemon verbena are aromatic herbs that can be dried and used for potpourri.
