Sand Gnat Repellent

Sand gnats, also known as biting midges, punkies and no-see-ums, suck blood from humans, mammals, reptiles and other insects. They usually cause only itching, but can result in welts and lesions in sensitive individuals. Repellents can prevent bites. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Topical Repellent

    • A topical repellent that contains DEET as the active ingredient provides protection against sand gnats. Applying such a repellent on exposed areas of the skin reduces the number of bites.

    Clothing

    • Wearing a long-sleeved shirt and long pants creates a barrier between sand gnats and your skin. A buttoned shirt collar or a scarf protects the neck, and a hat or cap keeps sand gnats out of your hair.

    Location

    • Sand gnats live along the shores of the sea, rivers and lakes. They usually do not travel far from these areas and you can avoid sand gnat bites by avoiding bodies of water.
