Affording a car becomes easier through comunity programs.

Buying a car can be challenging for those struggling to make ends meet. Community programs in northern Minnesota help low-income residents afford a car through financial and practical assistance.

  1. Programs

    • Two programs in northern Minnesota offering discounted deals to low-income residents include variants of the Jump Start program. In the northwest region, the program, managed by the White Earth Investment Initiative, helps those in the 900-square mile White Earth Indian Nation. Across the state to the east is Duluth's version managed by the nonprofit, Community Action Duluth.

    Details

    • The Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation partners with the White Earth Nation to provide up to $500 in down payment assistance. To be eligible, families must not exceed set income limits. As of August 2010, a family of four could not earn more than $53,000 annually to be eligible. The Duluth program allows a maximum annual income of not more than $44,100 for a family of four to qualify.
