There is a designated premises supervisor for every licensed pub in England and Wales.

In England and Wales, a designated premises supervisor (DPS) must be appointed as a condition of a premises obtaining a license to serve and/or sell alcohol. The position was created by the Licensing Act of 2003.

  1. DPS Certification

    • DPS certification is done under the authority of the British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body (BIIAB). The required certificate is the BIIAB Level 2 Award for Designated Premises Supervisors. The BIIAB website has a location search facility that allows you to locate the nearest BIIAB-approved training office.

    DPS Training

    • Designated premises supervisor training consists of a handbook for self-study, a one-day course and a short, multiple choice examination immediately following the course. All materials on the examination are included in the handbook. The handbook and course are intended to educated DPS candidates on their role and responsibilities as set out in the Licensing Act 2003. Other regulatory issues that impact on the day-to-day supervision of a licensed premises are also covered.

    DPS Certification Cost

    • There is a separate charge for all three certification elements, handbook, course and exam. Prices are set by the individual training offices. Approximate figures are £15 for the handbook, £120 for the course and £45 for the exam (as of January 2011).
