UBX is a GPS protocol.

The UBX Binary Protocol is a proprietary system of u-blox--a company which produces GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers. The protocol is also sometimes called the Binary UBX protocol or just the UBX protocol.

  1. Naming

    • The acronym "UBX" also denotes the chips that u-blox produces for GPS receivers. The UBX protocol is the communication convention used by these chips. The term "binary" is applied to the name to describe the format of messaging. That format is binary as opposed to text-based.

    Features

    • The industry standards for GPS systems are set by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). This body produces protocols for communications over GPS. The UBX protocol follows the NMEA 0183 standard, although this standard is text-based.

    Function

    • UBX Protocol messages operate over an asynchronous serial connection following the RS-232 standard. Messages are classified into different categories such as Configuration, Timing, Informative, Monitor and Navigation. Messages sent to the chip are either commands or enquiries.
