Is There Such a Thing As a Black Orchid?

Many different flowers are called black orchids. This can make them difficult to identify, as they have varying characteristics. Most black orchids, however, are in the Bulbophyllum genus of the orchid family. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Common types of black orchids include the Coelogyne pandurata, Liparis nervosa, Prosthechea cochleata and Masdevallia rolfeana. Many black orchids are in danger of extinction, including Bulbophyllum tokioi, Bulbophyllum rubrolabellum and Bulbophyllum pandanetorum.

    Features

    • Many black orchids have the scent of rotting carcasses, which attracts flies that assist them in the process of pollination. Many black orchids actually feature no black features. One prominent exception is the Coelogyne pandurata, which is known for its black lip.

    Geography

    • Black orchids typically grow in tropical climates of North America, South America, Africa and Asia.
