Cost of Patio Vs. Cost of Deck
Adding a deck or patio to your home can significantly expand both its usable space and its value. These spaces are great for outdoor relaxation, entertaining and many other activities. However, it's important to make sure that any outdoor project falls within your budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Self-Installation
-
Self-installation is the least expensive option, but it requires you to have some construction experience. Putting in a brick patio yourself (in 2007) brings the price down from about $3,500 when installed by a contractor to around $700. According to CostHelper, a 10-by-12 foot, single-level deck built from pressurized wood costs between $500 and $1,000 in materials.
Contractor-Installed Decks
-
Having a contractor install your deck or patio ensures professional-quality work, but it does raise the price. A 10-by-12 foot deck made from pressure-treated wood costs between $1,000 and $2,000 when installed by a contractor. A 20-by-20 foot deck of the same material costs between $4,000 and $6,000, according to CostHelper.

Upgrades
-
Higher quality materials, a larger space or multiple levels can significantly increase the price of your outdoor project. A 10-by-20 foot patio installed by a contractor costs between $1,000 and $2,000, but the same size patio in flagstone costs $3,000 to $6,000. A 20-by-20 foot deck in redwood brings the price up to near $9,000, and in luxury tropical woods, the same deck costs nearly $10,000. Adding steps, benches, planters, another level or other extras can also raise the price.
