Types
-
Some types include desert bahia (Bahia absinthifolia), ryegrass (Lolium spp.) and daylilies (Hemerocallis). Desert bahia is an herbaceous perennial from the Asteraceae family with yellow, daisy-like flowers. Ryegrass belongs to the Poaceae family and is a native to Eurasia. Daylilies are winter-hardy, night-blooming plants that are not true lilies, as they originate from the Hemerocallidaceae family.
Growing Conditions
-
Desert bahia germinates in 20 to 25 days, ryegrass germinates in five to 10 days and daylilies germinate in 14 days. Soil conditioning for perennials includes fertilizer and mulch during winter to keep plants healthy. Perennials require fall pruning to ready the plant for winter. Prune when evidence of diseases is present on the plant's foliage.

Uses
-
Desert bahia is a rapidly growing, spreading plant used for groundcover. In Southern states, ryegrass is cultivated for use as a fall-to-winter grass and as cover on sports fields. Daylilies are summer-blossoming plants placed along the borders of gardens and on slopes for groundcover.
