How to Remove a Jeep Center Console

The center console of your Jeep is a convenient piece of your vehicle's interior. The center console usually fits around your Jeep's shifter and emergency brake lever. Depending on the year and model Jeep, the center console will also usually contain a flip-up storage compartment that doubles as the driver's arm rest. There may come a time when you will have to remove your Jeep's center console. This process can be done at home within 20 minutes.

Step 1

Pop the hood on your Jeep and loosen the negative battery cable. Pull the negative battery cable off the negative post and set it to the side.

Step 2

Open the storage container in the center console and remove all the contents.

Step 3

Loosen the plastic screws at the front of the console with a screwdriver. These screws are located at the front of the console beneath the dashboard area. One will be on the driver's side, the other on the passenger side.

Step 4

Place the key in your ignition and place the shifter into the neutral position. Hold the base of the shifter with one hand and pull it straight up and off with the other.

Step 5

Unscrew the four metal screws on the bottom sides of the center console. You may have to forward and recline your seat to its far ends to access these screws.

Step 6

Lift the console up. Depending on the year and model of your Jeep, there may be several electric switches mounted in the center console. If there are any, use a screwdriver to loosen the wiring attached to the underside of the center console. Once the wires are disconnected, pull the center console up and off.
