Polycarbonate Sheet Tech Information

Polycarbonate is a type of plastic used to manufacture a variety of products for different industries. Polycarbonate sheets have properties including toughness, high heat and electrical resistance, and optical clarity.

  1. Types

    • The U.S. federal government divides polycarbonate sheets into four classifications. Type I is a standard sheet, Type II is flame resistant, Type III is mar resistant and contains UV-stabilizing additives, and Type IV is a coated sheet with a UV-resistant surface.

    Standards

    • Polycarbonate plastic sheets must meet standards dependent upon their final use. For example, the ASTM D635 standard measures the time and extent of burning of plastics in a horizontal position.

    Uses

    • Polycarbonate sheets are used for architectural glazing and windows because of their clear consistency. Food and medical product handling, aircraft interiors and bus shelters also use the plastic material.
