Function

A hydraulic jack is a machine that usually contains a lever that moves a small cylinder to pump fluid into a larger cylinder, exerting pressure over every square inch of the larger surface of the big cylinder. The liquid's lack of compressibility amplifies the initial force, allowing a puny human arm to push a lever and lift a car completely off the ground.

Composition

Hydraulic fluid is usually made from a type of mineral oil, with additional properties depending on the machine. The fluid in a hydraulic jack also contains lubricants that reduce wear on the machine's components.
