The average swimming pool installation price depends on many factors, such as whether the pool will be in-ground or below ground, the type of construction materials used and any landscaping, fencing or lighting required during the construction. As of 2010, the average U.S. swimming pool cost is about $100,000, according to Handy American.

Above-Ground

Above-ground pools are more economical and easier to maintain than in-ground pools. They have a capacity of about 10,000 gallons and come in a complete package that includes the vinyl liner, filters and pump. They cost about $7,000 or less as of 2010.

In-Ground

In-ground pools are more costly. Typically, as of 2010, a homeowner will spend about $40,000 for a pool, including the filtration system, water fill-up and lighting. Homeowners can expect to pay as much as $45,000 more for landscaping, fencing and any complex excavation needed.

In-Ground Types

The most durable in-ground pools are made of concrete. They are the most costly but are designed to last as long as 50 years. Vinyl pools, which are less expensive than concrete, use a preformed, flexible liner that is about 1-inch thick. Fiberglass pools consist of a large bowl-shaped piece, and are generally the least expensive of the three options.
