Calligraphy Editing Software
The term calligraphy is derived from Greek words meaning "beautiful writing." Found throughout history and widely used in modern times, calligraphy has become easily accessible through the use of software.

Types of Calligraphy
-
Calligraphy is categorized into three major types: Western, Oriental and Arabic. Each has a very different style and meaning. Western calligraphy gets its roots from the Greek and Roman alphabet, and as such, Western calligraphy features highly stylized letters. Oriental calligraphy, specifically Chinese calligraphy, is monosyllabic. Each image represents a word describing either an object or living form. Arabic calligraphy is used as a form of religious expression. Because of the potential for idolatry, Arabic calligraphy focuses on the sizes and shapes of words and letters rather than images.
Types of Software
-
Calligraphy software is a collection of digital type fonts and images that can be used to create different types of media from posters and advertisements to invitations and letters. Software can come with its own editing application, or in Windows TrueType, meaning it can be used in text editors that use Microsoft Windows fonts. Calligraphy software can be purchased with a focus on one type of calligraphy or a collection of many types. Calligraphy software can be purchased at retail stores or downloaded from the Internet.

Royalties

Before purchasing any software, be sure to understand the software company's royalty fees. Some software companies require that you pay royalties for use of their images. These fees can apply to simply printing the image for personal use to mass distribution for commercial purposes. Other software companies offer royalty-free licensing, meaning you are free to do with the images as you please without fees.
