The cost of replacing a bathtub depends on several factors.

Whether your current bathtub is beyond repair or you're updating your bathroom to have a more modern feel, there are several things you should consider in regard to cost when replacing a bathtub. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Bathtubs come in whole units or in sections. Whole unit tubs are often impossible to fit into your bathroom without taking down walls. Since this demolition can get expensive, there is also the option of sectional bathtubs. Once put together, you can't tell the bathtub wasn't one piece to begin with. Costhelper.com estimates that removing and replacing a bathtub costs $2,500 to $3,500 as of 2011.

    Features

    • The features of your new tub will affect the overall cost. For example, if your old tub didn't have jets, you may need to do some plumbing updates to be able to use the jets on your new tub. Basic bathtubs start at $200 to $600, but with added features can cost upward of $3,000.

    Considerations

    • Doing some of the replacement work yourself can save you lots of money. For example, if you have to do demolition, take down the walls yourself, but have a plumber come in to do the piping and installation of the bathtub. If your new tub is heavier than your old one, you may need to install extra floor joists, larger pipes and a larger hot water heater. These add-ons can tack on hundreds of dollars to your overall bathtub replacement costs.
