Methods of Preparing Alloy

There are several different methods of preparing alloys -- intimate mixtures of metals or metals and nonmetals -- depending on the chemistry of the metals involved. In all cases, however, the finished alloy is contaminated to some degree by carbon, salts and oxides.

  1. Fusion

    • Fusion essentially involves melting alloying components in fixed proportion is a melting pot or crucible so that they fuse together. The component with the higher melting point is melted first, followed by the component with the lower melting point. The components are thoroughly mixed, covered with powdered carbon to prevent oxidation and left to cool at room temperature.

    Reduction

    • Many metals exist naturally as compounds or ores. These compounds can be reduced in an electric arc furnace to separate the components and produce pure metal.

    Electrolysis

    • Different component metals can be deposited from a solution of their salts by a process known as electrolysis, or electro-deposition. The process involves passing electricity through the solution, or electrolyte, so that charged metal atoms (ions) are attracted to and deposited on the electrode of opposite charge.
