The Management of the Second Grade Classroom

Classroom management can include positive reinforcements.

Classroom management includes the way the teacher sets up the classroom, as well as the discipline procedure. If a second-grade classroom reflects the teacher's philosophy, he will be more at-ease and the teaching will flow.

  1. Classroom Set-up

    • When setting up the second-grade classroom, the teacher needs to visualize how she'll run the classroom and what routines need to be in place from the first day. The students need to know her expectations; with 7- and 8-year-old kids, she may have to repeat her rules several times.

    Behavior Management

    • Every classroom needs a discipline policy in place. Some schools require all classes to adhere to the same rules and consequences, while other schools allow teachers to create their own policies. Teachers should learn the school's expectations and what support the principal will provide.

    Cooperation

    • Regardless of the setting -- schools with self-contained classrooms or campuses where students switch classes during the day -- second-grade teachers must sometimes work with other faculty. They need to know when outside classes, such as music and gym, take place and make sure their classroom routines don't interfere with the second-graders' timely participation in those activities, to maintain good will with other instructors.
