Before beginning a research paper, researchers create a project proposal that serves multiple purposes. Primarily, the proposal helps the writer get focused and serves as an outline for the larger paper.

Definition

A researchers begins all proposals by clearly defining his research. He must be sure to include a narrow topic within the definition.

Background

A researcher also includes any bibliographic information he has collected thus far. He must describe any personal knowledge he possess about the topic.

Personal Ties

Many researchers include personal ties to the paper in the proposal. For example, if he is conducting research on cancer treatment and is a survivor, the researcher might note it in the proposal.

Goals

While writing the proposal, a researcher should include the goals he hopes to achieve. He should also include how he will achieve those goals.
