Ion Generator Safety

Ion generators, also known as ionizers or ozone generators, are used in household air purification devices. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined these devices are not very effective and can emit harmful levels of ozone into the home.

  1. Ozone

    • Ozone is a molecule with three oxygen atoms. One of the atoms is released and attaches to other molecules. This atom can attach to a molecule that forms a compound that could be dangerous to humans, plants or animals.

    Health Risks

    • Excessive levels of ozone can cause breathing problems. People with asthma can be particularly affected. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain and lung tissue inflammation.

    Safe Levels

    • Standards for safe ozone levels vary. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires levels no more than 0.05 parts per million (ppm), the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health dictate a maximum level of 0.10 ppm. EPA studies found ionizers can produce as much as 0.20 ppm to 0.30 ppm.
