Why Won't My Eggplant Grow?

Why Won't My Eggplant Grow? thumbnail
Eggplant, like tomato, needs sunlight and heat to grow well.

Related to other veggie garden crops like tomato and potato, eggplant is easy to grow as long as you meet its basic cultural needs. Perhaps the biggest error is providing inadequate warmth. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Time Frame

    • Eggplants appreciate both air and soil warmth. Do not plant eggplants outdoors until at least two weeks after the last spring frost in your area. Temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal.

    Considerations

    • Inadequate sunlight or soggy or infertile soils also limit the growth of an eggplant. Place it where the plan can bask in six to 10 hours of sun daily. Soil needs to be fertile, rich in organic matter and evenly moist but drain well (never soggy).

    Pest Warnings

    • Flea beetles and Japanese beetles both devour eggplants. Flea beetles in particular chew on young eggplant transplants and remove leaves and tender stems early in the growing season. Japanese beetles appear in midsummer.
