Pavement Vs. Cement Driveway

Driveways are not only used for parking cars, but also double as work and play areas for many families. Pavement and concrete are two types of material that are used to construct driveways, and both are available in a wide variety of styles and colors. Each type, however, has unique advantages and disadvantages.

Concrete

Cement driveways, technically known as concrete driveways, are constructed from durable materials that consist of crushed rocks, sand, water and various aggregates. Cement is a binding material that is used in concrete to hold materials together.

Pavement

Pavement is also known as asphalt, and is made up of gravel or sand that is mixed with a tar-like substance that is derived from leftover petroleum products. This material is commonly used for roads, streets and highways, and as a blacktop surface for many public playgrounds.

Considerations

When comparing pavement and concrete driveways, keep in mind that asphalt is designed to withstand freezing and thawing better than concrete. Asphalt driveways also have the ability to expand and are less prone to crack. Concrete driveways have the ability to hold up under various weather conditions and weight loads, but they will need proper finishing, sealers, and care in order to last. Pavement driveways are low maintenance in comparison.
