Walking canes symbolize elder status, respect and hold cultural history.

There is no date that sets when decorating walking canes first happened. However, canes, staffs and walking sticks have been used to record history, as far back as the Norse and members of African cultures. Ever since their advent, walking canes have served as a canvas to record history and mankind's creativity.

  1. Historic Decorations

    • Historically, a walking cane symbolized a status as an elder in the community. The elder would sit on a chair-like throne and hold a walking stick or cane to symbolize his status. In many ancient cultures, the cane would be decorated with animal heads such as a lion and even embedded with jewels.

    Famous Faces

    • Many people have walking canes custom carved or create their own canes out of wood that include facial symbols. The faces can range from religious figures that symbolize strength and determination like Moses to historic modern figures like Martin Luther King, Jr.. They can be zany and crazy figures such as movie and television characters Bart Simpson and Yoda from the "Star Wars" movies.

    Signatures and Greetings

    • Today, it is a common practice for people to hand carve their signatures on walking canes, especially if someone has to use one as a result of a temporary physical impairment. Many times, in addition to signature, the signer conveys a wish that the cane user will soon recover from having to use the cane.
