If you have a great idea and live in Maryland, use the resources available to you.

Inventors in Maryland should be aware of the resources and laws in place to assist them with the important task of creating a functioning invention prototype.

  1. Maryland TEDCO

    • Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) offers funding and other resources to small businesses and inventors who create scientific and technological products. The corporation has several programs providing funds to be used for prototype development and other invention-related needs.

    TEDCO Programs

    • The programs offered in 2011 by TEDCO include: Joint Technology Transfer Initiative (JTTI), which offers up to $75,000 for ventures related to homeland security; Techstart, which offers up to $15,000 for ideas from university students; Johnson & Johnson Joint Investment Fund offers up to $75,000 for companies with ideas household goods manufacturer has interest in; and the Working Capital Loan Fund (WCLF), provides between $15,000 and $50,000 to small businesses and early-stage tech companies.

    Private Enterprises

    • There are also invention development companies that offer their services in Maryland. These services include idea development, patenting, prototype development and marketing. Many of these companies offer to develop a prototype of your idea, but because these are for-profit companies, do so at a high cost. The state wants to make clear these companies may not engage in misrepresentation of their abilities and warns inventors to be cautious when dealing with them.
