Flowers and Fruit
-
Lilac trees develop blooms on the previous season's growth. The small flowers are funnel- or cylinder-shaped and bloom in colors ranging from white to purple. Blooming in spring or early summer, lilacs also produce smooth, oblong fruit in late summer to fall.
Hybrids
-
Some 800 hybrids were created by mixing S. vulgaris L., common lilac, with various other species. Chinese lilac, S. x chinensis, was created by mixing S. persica and S. vulgaris. This spreading small tree has purple blooms and can grow 15 feet high. S. x hyacinth flora, mount baker, blooms white flowers early in the season and can grow 8 feet high with a 10-foot spread.
