Are Steam Cleaners Safe for Laminate Floors? thumbnail
Laminate floors must be kept free of excessive water or steam.

Laminate floors are made out of several layers of compressed materials, creating a durable surface that mimics the look of almost any other type of flooring. Specific cleaning methods must be applied to laminate flooring. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Laminate Care

    • Laminate floors should be swept, dry mopped or vacuumed on a regular basis. Occasionally they may be cleaned with a damp mop and a specially formulated laminate floor cleaner. Stains may be cleaned with a mixture of 1 cup of ammonia or white vinegar and 1 gallon of water.

    Steam Cleaning

    • Steam cleaning is not recommended for laminate flooring due to the fact that the introduction of water will warp the laminate. Once damaged, laminate flooring can be difficult or impossible to repair. Any excess water should be wiped up with a towel or cloth immediately.

    Considerations

    • Do not install laminate flooring in areas where excessive moisture may accumulate, or place door mats or area rugs just outside laminated areas to minimize water damage. Do not use soap, wax or other products on laminate surfaces. The special top coating does not need to be re-finished or cleaned in any other manner besides dry cleaning and occasional damp mopping.
