Difference Between a VSI and a Cone Crusher

Vertical shaft impactors (VSI) and cone crushers are types of crushing machines which reduce the size of rocks. Large rocks can be turned into smaller rocks, gravel or dust by the action of a crusher.

  1. Crushing Action

    • A cone crusher works by pushing rock against a hopper with a spindle, which gyrates in an erratic pattern, breaking up rocks using surface force. A VSI crusher uses a high speed rotor which throws the rocks against the crush chamber, using velocity to break up the rock.

    Product

    • Because of the different functions of VSI and cone crushers, the crushed rock produced by each type of machine is different. A VSI crusher produces a more evenly crushed rock product, whereas the cone crusher produces irregularly shaped crushed rock and particles.

    Suitability

    • Cone crushers are most suited for crushing substances categorized as mid-hardness or harder. VSI crushers are more versatile, as they can crush hard or soft rocks and ores effectively.
