Diesel Vs. Gas in Pulling Performance

Diesel Vs. Gas in Pulling Performance thumbnail
Pulling power is enhanced with a diesel engine.

Many truck dealers offer gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles for sale. When considering a purchase, weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each type of fuel if the vehicle is going to be hauling loads.

  1. Types

    • Diesel is derived from a different portion of the crude oil distillation process than gasoline. Diesel's chemical embodiment houses more hydrocarbons than gas, making diesel denser and requiring more heat for combustion.

    Features

    • Because of diesel's high density and higher boiling point, once the combustion process has begun, the power output for the diesel is 17.2 percent more than a comparable gasoline power output for the same vehicle. Subsequently, this gives the diesel more pulling power overall.

    Considerations

    • Since diesel engines work at a lower rate of revolutions per minute (rpm), than a standard gasoline engine, this allows the pulling performance to have greater torque, without the typical wear on the engine seals or bearing.
