What Is an EPDM Gasket?

Gaskets are important parts of a mechanical assembly. They provide a way to seal two attached items so no leakage results between the connection. One gasket, such as an EPDM, functions in a variety of applications.

  1. Function

    • EPDM, or ethylene propylene diene monomer, is a type of rubber that sustains its shape and integrity through many tough assignments. It has been used in weatherproofing, outside electrical areas, vehicle taillights, and HVAC assemblies.

    Features

    • EPDM gaskets are manufactured to withstand ultraviolet radiation, oxidation, weathering and ozone. In addition, EPDM gaskets keep their strength even when faced with solvents or animal-based oils. This versatility makes this type of gasket useful for outdoor and indoor applications.

    Considerations

    • EPDM gaskets can be purchased in a variety of thicknesses, from 1/16th of an inch to 1/2 of an inch. Also, the flexibility, or durometer, can vary for the purchaser, depending on the application of the placement of the gasket.
