How Much Horsepower Does a Turbo Add?

Turbos add power to a stock engine.

Stock car engines provide the basic movement of a vehicle within the manufacturer's specifications. But adding a turbo assembly to a stock car engine gives the extra power desired by the owner for more road capability.

Function

A turbo is an addition to the engine that uses the exhaust gas to drive more air into the engine, creating more power from a higher ratio of air to fuel within the engine chamber.

Significance

A turbo can add up to seven times more horsepower than a standard manufactured engine assembly. By using the exhaust air to create power, the turbo actually helps the engine have less friction and heat, resulting in more efficient burning of the fuel.

Considerations

The added power, or torque, from the turbo also helps while driving in high altitudes. Aside from having more power while maneuvering up a hill or mountain, the less oxygen in the atmosphere is negated by the influx of air from the turbo, allowing the engine to have the air needed for functioning.
