Will Coffee Grounds Get Rid of Ground Moles?

Ground moles can damage yards by digging tunnels, creating soil mounds and destroying plants. To keep ground moles away, people sometimes use a home remedy, such as spreading coffee grounds around the area.

Efficacy

According to Michigan State University, coffee grounds are unlikely to effectively repel moles. Coffee grounds attract earthworms, which ground moles like to eat. As such, coffee grounds will likely not keep moles away.

Coffee Can Trap

Although coffee grounds can't effectively drive moles away, the container it comes in can trap moles. A large, 3-lb. coffee can placed under a mole runway serves as a pit trap for moles.

Alternatives

Repellents containing castor bean oil can safely and effectively drive moles away, but the moles will likely come back. Combining repellents with traps and physical barriers can keep them from coming back.
