When to Prune Gardenias in California
Gardenias are fragrant and beautiful broadleaf evergreen bushes that require little pruning in order to keep them smelling and looking nice. There is a specific time to prune them in your California garden to set buds for the following season. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Timing
-
Prune gardenias in late summer after they've finished blooming. Gardenias are garden oddballs. They bloom in the summer but set buds in the fall. Because of this characteristic, you should prune gardenia plants immediately after they flower to avoid interfering with the growth cycle of next season's buds.
Tip
-
Late pruning can damage plants. As a broadleaf evergreen, gardenias don't need much pruning. Several years may go by before you need to thin out some dead branches and shape up the plant.
-
Warning
-
Apply fertilizer after pruning. Summer's end is the optimum time to prune if your gardenias do need a trim. Pruning them in the fall could leave the plant vulnerable to harsh winter conditions like those found in Northern California. Also, any new growth would not have a chance to harden off before winter.
