Sunscreen & Bug Repellent Products

Sunscreen & Bug Repellent Products thumbnail
Separate applications of sunscreen and bug repellent work more effectively.

People often need to use both sunscreen and bug repellent at the same time when going outdoors to protect themselves from exposure to UV rays and insect bites. Various products combine the two, but separate products for the two purposes work better, according to the University of Florida IFAS Extension. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Frequency

    • Using a single product that contains bug repellent containing DEET and sunscreen can adversely affect health. While sunscreen requires frequent reapplication, bug repellent does not. A product that combines the two can promote unnecessary use of bug repellent, according to the University of Florida IFAS Extension.

    Safety and Efficacy

    • Combining sunscreen and bug repellent in one product reduces the efficacy of both compounds. According to MedlinePlus, a combination product increases bug repellent absorption and reduces sunscreen protection. Using a bug repellent product and then a sunscreen also increases bug repellent absorption.

    Solution

    • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people should first apply sunscreen, then bug repellent. Following product label instructions ensure proper application for the two products. MedlinePlus recommends waiting 30 minutes between applying sunscreen and bug repellent.
