Espalier Pear Trees

Pears can be grown on a trellis if you use the espalier method of pruning and training.

Espalier is a method of pruning and shaping trees, particularly apple and pear trees. The result can be decorative. When considering espalier for pear trees, consider the equipment, location and the amount of work needed to maintain the design.

Benefits

The espalier method takes less space than required by traditionally grown trees. It adds a decorative element to the landscape and makes harvesting easy to do.

Equipment

A trellis or frame is necessary to tie the tree branches. This facilitates achieving the flat shape. Because of the added strain this type of shaping causes on the tree, the frame be paced against a flat wall or surface for added support. String or wire, pruning shears and clippers are the other items needed.

Disadvantages

Espalier of pear trees requires frequent pruning in order to maintain the shape. It is a labor-intensive method that should only be considered if the gardener is committed to the work.
