Backyard Swimming Pool Safety
With extreme heat comes the desire to cool off, and backyard swimming pools can help achieve this goal. However, before racing off into the pool always make sure certain safety precautions are in place. If these safety precautions are ignored, swimmers may find themselves racing to the emergency room instead of lounging poolside. Does this Spark an idea?

Purpose
-
Understanding backyard pool safety, and implementing specific safety features, can decrease the odds of a child under the age of five from drowning. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission states that an estimated 350 children under the age of five fall victim to drowning each year. Many of these drownings occur in residential backyard swimming pools.
Safety Matters
-
Flotation devices should always be used by younger children, especially in the deep end of the pool. When the pool is not in use, make sure it is covered with a power safety cover. Pool alarms and well-constructed pool enclosures can prevent children from entering the pool unsupervised. Adults should never swim while intoxicated.

Eyes Open
-
Perhaps the best way to increase safety around a backyard pool is to always keep your eyes open, especially if children are around. If a child cannot be found, always check the pool first. A cellphone should be kept nearby in the event of an emergency. If possible, have someone trained in CPR near the pool, or become trained in CPR yourself.
