Soil Profile Summary
Knowing and understanding your soil's profile can help you maximize the growth of plants, shrubs and trees. Soil can be vastly different based on region and locale. Taking corrective action often is necessary to improve the soil. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Facts
-
Soil includes air, water, and organic and inorganic material. Loose, organic soils that are brown, red or yellow typically make the best soil as they have the best oxidation. Soils that are different from these colors can indicate poorly drained or insufficiently oxygenated soil.
Corrective Actions
-
Another important feature of good soil mix is the pH number. pH represents the acidity and alkalinity of the soil, stated numerically from zero to 14. While seven represents neutral soil, anything below this figure represents an increase in acidity, while numbers above seven indicate higher alkalinity.

Considerations
-
You most likely will need to test your soil to determine its current pH and other nutrient factors. Adjusting your soil will require fertilizer and organic material, and removal of foreign materials, such as weed roots, that can create difficult growing conditions.
