What Is a Chevy Tow Package?

Having a vehicle with the capability to tow and haul can come in handy for many reasons, from moving furniture to work. The factory-installed towing package may depend on which vehicle you select.

Silverado Towing Capacity

The towing and hauling capabilities of the Chevy Silverado depend on the model selected. For example, the 1500 has a towing capacity of 10,700 lbs. and a max payload of 1,980 lbs. The 2500 Heavy Duty has a towing capacity of 17,800 lbs. and a payload of 4,192 lbs. The 3500 Heavy Duty has a towing capacity of 21,700 lbs. and can haul 6,635 lbs.

Silverado Towing Package

According to information from Chevrolet, the Silverado's "hitch trailering package" includes a welded steel hitch, wiring receptacle and 2-inch receiver on light duty pickups. The package includes a "sleeve adapter" for heavy duty trucks to make the receiver 2 inches.

Other Chevy vehicles

For 2011 Chevy Suburban, Tahoe and Avalanche the "heavy-duty trailering package" includes an external transmission oil cooler, 3.42 ratio rear axle and two-speed transfer case. The 2011 Traverse "trailering equipment" option includes a heavy-duty engine cleaner and trailer hitch. The Colorado "trailering equipment" option includes a hitch with a weight distribution platform and a seven-pin sealed trailer wiring connector.
