Spring-flowering plants like daffodils often need fall plantings.

Flower bulbs grow perennials, or plants that come back and flower year after year. All bulbs require careful site selection, planting care and spacing. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Varieties

    • Dutch bulbs come in a range of varieties, including tulips, daffodils, calla lilies, canna lilies, dahlias, amaryllis, lilies, peonies and irises. Gardeners should select Dutch bulbs according to their personal taste and the conditions in their yard.

    Planting Time

    • Different bulbs require different planting times. Daffodils, tulips, crocuses and calla lilies will require late-fall to early-winter plantings, while irises, lilies and amaryllis require early-spring plantings.

    Location

    • Most bulbs require locations where they'll receive full sun for eight hours every day. Some bulbs do well with partial or filtered sun. Gardeners should always take their location into account when choosing bulbs.

    Foundation

    • All bulbs do best when planted in the right foundation. Gardeners should mix quick-draining soil and organic compost into any planting site to give the bulbs good nutrition and quick drainage.

    Planting

    • Different Dutch bulbs require different spacing and planting depth. Each bulb comes with a set of instructions in regard to these needs.
