Types of Gardens
-
"Flower garden" is a broad term that encompasses a variety of garden types and nearly innumerable plants. Annual flower gardens consist of plants that survive only one growth cycle. Common annuals include begonias, butterfly flower, cleome, cosmos and dianthus. Perennial flower gardens are filled with plants that return to bloom for several growing seasons. This category includes yarrow, hollyhock, columbine, butterfly weed, false indigo and Shasta daisies.
Hardscaping
-
Hardscaping is a term used for nongrowing parts of landscape decor including walkways, walls, steps and patios. These features often create ideal backdrops for colorful flower gardens.

Considerations
-
Hardscaping is typically a more expensive component of landscaping than flower gardens. Hardscaping often requires the advice or labor of a professional landscaper, but once it is complete, maintenance is simple. Flower gardens are economical as they are often do-it-yourself projects, but care and maintenance can be labor intensive. Often, the most beautiful landscapes incorporate a mixture of these growing and nongrowing features.
