Growing herbs at home provides fresh seasoning for cooking.

If you don't think you have enough room to grow herbs, you might want to go vertical. Vertical herb gardens, or living walls, offer a fresh supply of herbs while taking up minimal space. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Herb Options

    • The space available in vertical herb gardens for plant roots will be limited. Plants with small or shallow-growing root systems work best. According to the Herb Companion, some rosemary plants and sages can grow well with the restricted root space.

    Watering

    • Vertical herb gardens use watering systems to bring the water to the roots of the plants. The simplest watering system uses basins or bowls placed above the herbs to catch water and filter it downwards.

    Framework

    • The framework of vertical herb gardens supports the soil and roots of the plants. The framework can be made of wood, metal and even plastic. Some look like large picture frames while others might be mistaken for hanging shoe holders, with pockets for each plant. The framework plays an important part as it maintains the stability of the garden.

    Soil Options

    • Soil or peat moss can be used to fill the vertical garden. Soil should drain water away well, but also be able to remain slightly moist to support plant life.
