Sony Vs. Samsung DLP HDTV

Digital light processing (DLP) high-definition televisions (HDTVs) seem to have completely replaced cathode ray tube TVs on the market. Sony and Samsung are two popular manufacturers of these TVs, and each company's products have various features.

  1. Function

    • DLP televisions create images by projecting the image using a metal halide lamp and a special light processing chip, light emitting diodes (LED) or lasers. Sony and Samsung DLP HDTVs operate using mostly LEDs to backlight their projector. However, Samsung was the first electronics company to introduce LED technology in DLP HDTVs.

    Features

    • Sony makes its DLP HDTVs under the Bravia brand name, including the NX, EX and BX. These TVs each have different features including Internet access, 3D capabilities and other proprietary technology. Samsung also produces several DLP HDTVs which have features similar to the Sony models, including Internet access. Some Samsung DLP HDTVs also have special applications that can be accessed via the remote.

    Considerations

    • If you are going to purchase a Sony or Samsung DLP HDTV, you should weigh the cost against the features that you desire. Samsung models tend to be a bit more expensive, however they also have certain features, such as app capabilities, that are not found in Sony models. Sony models may be a better value for the cost for certain consumers.
