What Are the Different UTVs Available?
A utility task vehicle (UTV) is a small, four-wheel-drive, off-road vehicle that typically seats two to four people. Although they are popular with workers who need to quickly cover large outdoor areas, there are many safety concerns with UTVs, and some models have been subjected to recalls. A variety of different UTVs are available to consumers, each with different advantages and safety considerations.
-
Engines
-
Consumers can find UTVs with either diesel, electric or gasoline motors. While gasoline motors can power a UTV to speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour, they are also the most dangerous in light of the susceptibility of the vehicles to roll-overs. Electric motors are safer for UTVs, although they are typically much less powerful.
Wheels
-
UTVs can be found with six, five, four or three wheels. Six- and five-wheeled UTVs offer more stability, while four- and three-wheeled UTVs are more dangerous if they reach higher speeds.
-
Cargo Beds
-
Because the function of UTVs is most commonly to transport large items over vast outdoor spaces, such as golf courses, the size of the integral cargo bed is perhaps the most important consideration when purchasing one. An overloaded cargo bed raises the center of gravity and increases the likelihood of a roll-over. The cargo bed on each UTV is balanced differently, and must be evaluated in light of the load it will carry.
