Chromium Plating Process Description

Chromium, or chrome, plating is an electrochemical process in which a layer of chrome is deposited on a piece of base metal. The plating is both decorative and corrosion-resistant.

  1. Preparation

    • The base metal is placed in a steel or plastic tank filled with a solution that contains chromium. One electrode is connected to the base metal, another electrode is placed in the solution and an electric current is applied.

    Applying Current

    • According to the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers website, the low voltage electrical current causes the positive chromium ions in the solution to be attracted to the negatively charged base metal, forming a chromium coating.

    Hazards

    • Misting from the chromic acidic bath in the electroplating tank has been associated with burn injuries to mucosal membranes in workers. Lung cancer has also be documented. Controlling misting with additives and using chemical hoods helps reduce these risks.
